Spring Regional Sea Surface Temperatures as a Precursor of European Summer Heatwaves

چکیده
Different spring and early summer North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies (SSTAs) have been shown to precede recent European heatwaves (EuSHWs). So far, the limited number of observed events associated with several physical mechanisms has prevented a robust identification SSTAs as precursors. Here, we extend beyond previous studies by combining 100 historical simulations (1850–2005) MPI Grand-Ensemble an explainable neural-network method. We find that tripolar pattern positive in Subtropical Gyre is precursor EuSHWs. In addition, west Iberian Peninsula, Sea, Baltic Sea Mediterranean relate distinct soil moisture anomaly patterns are precursors western southeastern EuSHWs, respectively. While phase indicates whether EuSHW might emerge, regional indicate spatial characteristics

Observational evidence of European summer weather patterns predictable from spring
Forecasts of summer weather patterns months in advance would be of great value for a wide range of applications. However, seasonal dynamical model forecasts for European summers have very little skill, particularly for rainfall. It has not been clear whether this low skill reflects inherent unpredictability of summer weather or, alternatively, is a consequence of weaknesses in current forecast ...
متن کاملBoreal spring Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode, Indian Ocean sea surface temperature, and East Asian summer monsoon
[1] The relationships among the boreal spring Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM), the Indian Ocean (IO) sea surface temperature (SST), and East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) are examined statistically in this paper. The variability of boreal spring SAM is closely related to the IO SST. When the SAM is in its strong positive phase in boreal spring, with low-pressure anomalies over the south po...
متن کاملRising Mediterranean Sea Surface Temperatures Amplify Extreme Summer Precipitation in Central Europe
The beginning of the 21st century was marked by a number of severe summer floods in Central Europe associated with extreme precipitation (e.g., Elbe 2002, Oder 2010 and Danube 2013). Extratropical storms, known as Vb-cyclones, cause summer extreme precipitation events over Central Europe and can thus lead to such floodings. Vb-cyclones develop over the Mediterranean Sea, which itself strongly w...
متن کاملSea-ice-thickness variability in the Chukchi Sea, spring and summer 2002–2004
Measurements of sea-ice thickness were obtained from drill holes, an ice-based electromagnetic induction instrument (IEM), and a ship-borne electromagnetic induction instrument (SEM) during the early-melt season in the southern Chukchi Sea in 2002 and 2004, and in late summer 2003 at the time of minimum ice extent in the northern Chukchi Sea. An ice roughness criterion was applied to distinguis...
متن کاملLinking Regional Winter Sea Ice Thickness and Surface Roughness to Spring Melt Pond Fraction on Landfast Arctic Sea Ice
The Arctic sea ice cover has decreased strongly in extent, thickness, volume and age in recent decades. The melt season presents a significant challenge for sea ice forecasting due to uncertainty associated with the role of surface melt ponds in ice decay at regional scales. This study quantifies the relationships of spring melt pond fraction (fp) with both winter sea ice roughness and thicknes...
